Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment that is very similar to other more well-known carotenes, such as beta-carotene or lutein. In nature, it is most found in aquatic animals such as salmon, trout, sea crabs and fish eggs. Like other carotenoids, astaxanthin cannot be synthesized by the body itself, so it must be taken in through the diet.
